Cipha Sounds, You F**ked Up

Cipha Sounds, who DJs for Hot 97's very popular morning show, really screwed himself over last Friday morning. I know a little more of the story then I'm sure many of you have heard, as I was listening live. When taking calls from listeners answering a question that concerned the HIV virus, Cipha Sounds said "The only reason I'm HIV negative is because I don't mess with Haitian girls." Yeah... I know, he f**ked up. He finished speaking and immediately his co-hosts, the always quick to judge Kate Foxx (though rightfully so this time) and Peter Rosenberg, took offense to the comment. He attempted to apologize immediately but seemed lost in his attempt to say the right thing.

As a regular listener to the morning show, I was caught very off guard by his comments because Cipha Sounds is never the type of dude to say anything besides what you expect a random dude from around the way to say. I would hope that any random dude around the way wouldn't feel the same way as Cipha Sounds. I was a big fan of the dude but saying some reckless s**t like that on the radio will guarantee the lost of many fans. As a radio personality, people are always listening so you have to watch everything you say. His attempt to be funny did more than just backfire; the 'joke' is in no way funny and has sparked the Haitian community.

For Now, Hot97 has suspended Cipha Sounds. The group protesting in the video above wants him fired. I don't think I necessarily agree with firing the guy but a very hefty suspension without pay may be a firm and resounding punishment. I also agree with the group that Hot97 should use this opportunity to push an HIV prevention campaign. Great things always come from the worse situations... that's what being American is all about anyway, right?!
